Typically there is an error saying that the disc was dirty or scratched (error C:13:02). The disc may have been already finalised or un-finalised and the camera will not allow you to finalise it again.

The second commonest problem we get on these is when the camera displays E:3100 error in the camcorder screen and will not allow playback or recording of video. This indicates "HDD format error" on the internal hard disk drive. The images of the video clips are no longer displayed and all appear to be lost.

The best advice is turn off the camera and, in the case of hdd camcorder, do not use it at all until recovery takes place. Some camcorders record high quality HD movies directly to mini 8cm DVDs for easy transfer and easy playback in computers and Blu-ray players and many computers. Often the discs need to be finalised before they will play in other recorders. However if you have already removed the disk from the camera, attempts to re-finalize it by inserting it again into the camera will not work and we have had cases where it has destroyed the video by overwriting the disk.
